Glam rock at the Seaside Pub

While pop veterans Black Lace were helping to celebrate the 75^th anniversary of Priory Hill Holiday Park in Leysdown on Saturday, The Seaside Pub (formerly The Beach) in Minster was drumming up a crowd with glam rock classics at the other end of the Island.

The Priory party, with Danny Dyer joining in with Do The Conga, Agadoo and Superman, kept cool in the evening air with a temporary outside stage during filming for yet another episode of the Sky TV show The Dyers’ Caravan Park.

But things were getting hot and sweaty inside the Seaside Avenue watering hole.

The pub doesn’t have a stage but holding court at the end of the bar next to the ladies’ loo were Glamstar.

The Bromley band often plays as a five-piece but at Minster they strip down to a tight trio featuring lead guitarist and singer Des Hann and his mate Mick Chapman on rhythm guitar and backing vocals plus Bob Parr on bass.

They are regular visitors to the Sheppey pub.

Landlady Lana Box, who ensured all visitors were suitably kitted out in either glitter wigs or face paints, enthused: “They always deliver.”

And, indeed, they did.

After a great first set as their alter ego of rock covers band Run For Cover, the trio swapped jeans for tights, donned glitter jackets and outrageous wigs and stomped back in platform boots for a stonking second set straight from the 70s.

After opening with the Sweet’s Blockbuster, they stormed into a non-stop glam fest of past hits from T Rex, David Bowie, Queen, Slade, Mud, Alice Cooper and The Monkees.

Think of Jean Genie, School’s Out, Ballroom Blitz, I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, Get It On, Rocket Man, Tiger Feet and We Are The Champions and you get an idea of how the evening went.

And yes, they are due to return at Christmas, turning the past into presents…
